MISHKAN T'FILAH

The Brotherhood project to bring Mishkan T’filah to Temple, started in the fall of 2002, has been accomplished! The new Reform prayer books were dedicated on December 7, 2007 at a beautiful Shabbat and Chanukah Service. The books are now in regular use for every Shabbat and Festival.

We have one more task to complete the project; namely, to recognize the many generous donors who dedicated our new prayer books. We need to affix commemorative plaques in each book. Since many of the dedications were made over five years ago, we are going to give all our donors an opportunity to update their dedications before we put them in the new books. If you want to keep your dedication as submitted—no action is necessary. If you would like to change your dedication, please contact Bob Pollock at rfpollock@sbcglobal.net or send mail to 2044 Larchmont Road, Akron, OH  44313.

Thanks to all who supported this important Temple Brotherhood project.

Interfaith Dinner at St. Paul's Episcopal Church

Fifty people attended the Brotherhood Interfaith Dinner at St. Paul's Episcopal Church on October 24. Jim Levin received a plaque in appreciation of 25 years service as Interfaith Chairman. Dr. Richard Hirsh spoke about his trip to Hanoi in 2000 to install a new donated mammography machine and to train the locals in its use. Among those present were David Adler, Temple Israel Brotherhood President, Rev. Mark Pruitt, the new Rector at St. Paul's, Associate Rector, Rev. Dena Cleaver-Bartholomew, The Rev. Dr. George Murphy, Pastoral Associate, and The Rev. Polly Glanville, Deacon.

Annual Cookout

Brotherhood's annual August cookout was held at the home of Bob and Charlotte Pollock. Host and chef was Bob Pollock, assisted by son-in-law, Jason Kane.  Brotherhood members and guests enjoyed hot dogs, chicken wings and barbecue with all the trimmings, plus desserts.  After the meal the group reviewed Brotherhood's finances and programming for the coming year.

Brotherhood serves Temple Israel, Brotherhood members and the Akron community through its contribution of energy and resources to promote Jewish identity, Jewish education and a positive Jewish presence.

A major program of Brotherhood is to provide ushers at all Temple services, including at Shabbat and the High Holidays. For B’nai Mitzvah students, we present kiddush cups and offer videotaping of services. We support religious education by funding the Minyanaire Club, administering the Herbert Herz Memorial Award, and providing funds to assist Religious School students with the cost of out-of-town trips.

Brotherhood sponsors speakers at Temple on sports and current issues and organizes fundraisers and outings to sporting events and social and cultural functions. Each year we sponsor a Red Cross blood drive and participate in an Interfaith dinner with St. Paul’s Church Men’s Club.

In the past several years, Brotherhood has underwritten the cost of the forthcoming new URJ prayer book Mishkan T’filah. Temple families have had the opportunity to dedicate books in honor or in memory of a loved one. We have provided funds for new and replacement equipment for Temple. We work on projects around the Temple building and grounds when the need arises.

We welcome new members and offer opportunities to get involved. Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday of each month (dinner meetings) or on Sunday mornings (brunch).

For more information, refer to the current issue of the WINDOW or contact any board member or the Temple office.

Adopted as NFTB's interfaith education arm, The Jewish Chautauqua Society was originally founded in 1893 by Rabbi Henry Berkowitz.  NFTB is the men's agency of the Union for Reform Judaism, the central body of Reform Judaism in North America
