Gedaliah Gertz Education Center
The Temple Israel religious school offers an exemplary Jewish education to children which teaches them to take pride in their Jewish heritage and to learn skills which will prepare them to lead productive Jewish lives. Students in grades 3-6 meet on Wednesdays for Mid-Week Hebrew from 4:30 to 6 p.m.; students in kindergarten through 8th grade attend Sunday School from 9:30 a.m. to noon; the 10th grade meets on Wednesdays for Confirmation class from 6-8:00 p.m.
MINYANAIRE TRIP 2008
The Minyanaire Club went to Wild Water Kingdom at Geauga Lake on Wednesday, June 11 from 11:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
Several students earned their club status by attending ten or more
services, with many others participating throughout the year.
Rabbi Lipper and Carrie Shkolnik will chaperone the annual trip, sponsored by
the Temple Israel Brotherhood.
Confirmation Class will join us for this adventure.
This is really a great day for children to spend time together outside of the
Temple.
The Minyanaire Club will begin again next school year with the first Family
Service.

On May 11th, the eighth grade class and their
teachers, Sarah Yuronka and Brian Feinsilber went to visit this Mosque.
They met with 2 adult teachers and three students, 2 girls in 8th grade and one
boy in 7th grade. They presented a basic understanding of Islam, and compared
the similarities with Judaism. They also showed us the prayer room and
explained the procedures of pray preparations, and other important rituals.
This was a wonderful educational experience for them as well as us.

Sunday School students experienced Passover Around the World on April 13, learning about customs of Ashkenazi Jews, Ethiopians, Jews of Arab countries and Sephardic Jews. They tasted charoset of each area, ate matzah and created crafts: baskets (Ethiopia), Hamsas (Arab), wooden spoons (Ashkenazi) and necklaces (Sephardic). Everyone went home with a bag of artwork.

LOCK-IN 2008

Fourth Year Another Success
Moms and dads came together to share Sunday morning with their families. Some
cooked, some served, and some flipped pancakes. This annual end-of-January
breakfast always provides an opportunity for families to socialize and just
spend a relaxing morning at breakfast.
Behind the scenes, many dads, including Dan Sutter, Rabbi Lipper, Chris Deppisch,
Nyk Pidhorodeckyj, Michael Hood, Lee Hilton, Jerry Krueger and Mike Goldenberg
arrived before the sun came up to begin mixing the batter and making the eggs
for a great breakfast.
Out front, the moms set beautiful tables and served the delicious food: Julie
Krueger, Elyssa Hilton, Wendy Weiland, Janet Silverman, Debbie Hershfield, Jody
Schweiger and Rita Weinberg, with help from Sophie Goldenberg..
We could not have done it without the Kitchen manager, Diane McCluskey, and her
staff along with James Bowick.
Boxes of Plenty
The third grade class just completed its tzedakah project for this year. With a great deal of help from Temples Sisterhood and the congregation as part of Kehillah: Building Community, the students collected eleven boxes of goodies to send to Jewish soldiers overseas! The items we collected are going to be shared with 33 soldiers. Our boxes included snacks, toiletries, pens, paper, note cards, Ziploc bags, baby wipes and CDs, DVDs and cassettes, all of which were on a list of much needed/desired items.
The class would like to thank Sisterhood for all of its help, including paying for the postage to ship the boxes. Special thanks go to Carol Friedman and Audrey Baker who came to our classroom and helped us sort and pack the boxes. We would also like to thank all of the congregants who donated items for our project. We were so happy to have so many fun things to send overseas. Were hoping to hear back from our soldiers and will let you know if we do!

Brianna
Greer was the Champion of the Dreidel Spinning Contest.
Runners up: Robbie Deppisch, Sam Shkolnik
The 8th grade traveled to Washington, D.C. in early December
to visit the Holocaust Museum,
the Roosevelt Memorial, WWII Memorial and other sites.

Shlichim Aharon and Lehi Schwartz presented a program on Solidarity, in recognition of Israeli soldiers missing in action.
The
seventh graders from Temple Israel and Beth El Congregation visited the
Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills, Michigan, on October 21. The
students have been studying the Holocaust since school began.
