SPONSORSHIPS AVAILABLE FOR THE WINDOW

Tell your story by sponsoring a page, a part of a page, or an entire issue of the WINDOW. For as low as $250 you can have a ¼ of a page, with any combination of the following: You can place an ad, submit a profile of your business, or extend a thank you, tribute or well wishes to those you know. For only $500 you will receive half a page, and for $1,000 you will become an issue sponsor, which includes a full page for content of your choosing (subject to editorial appropriateness), and additional recognition throughout the issue.

This is a great way to help out Temple by subsidizing the WINDOW, an integral part of Temple life. It keeps us informed, marks important occasions, and lets us know about upcoming events. Most importantly, it has been the critical connection for so many of our congregants to our Temple family.

We all know about how rising costs and a challenging economy are affecting everyone’s budget, and the WINDOW is no exception. The Marketing Committee has been working to reduce costs through the elimination of one monthly issue (July), and we changed to a printer who is providing a much better value. To increase revenues, we are attempting to boost advertising. Please help us in this effort by supporting the WINDOW.

Another way that you can help is by eliminating your mailed copy of the WINDOW by reading it online on Temple’s website, www.templeisraelakron.org, or picking up a copy when you are at Temple. If you are willing to give up your mailed version of the WINDOW, contact the Temple office at 330.762.8617.

BEDS FOR KIDS

Summit County Children Services  is seeking monetary donations to help provide needy children with adequate beds. Many families cannot afford to purchase beds for their kids, so they have to sleep on floors or couches. The SAC has decided to help, and will match donations from

Temple Israel’s members up to a total of $500. Checks made out to Temple Israel may be dropped off at the Temple Israel office. Please note in the lower left corner of the check “Social Action Beds.”

 KIDS’ COATS DRIVE

Amy Rosenman has coordinated a winter coat drive with donations from Temple Israel’s Sunday School students and families. Between 30-40 coats have already been collected, and will be donated to Open M, a non-profit, neighborhood-based support network celebrating its 40th anniversary in Akron. Open M describes its mission as feeding the hungry, caring for the sick, nurturing children, supporting families and strengthening neighborhoods. If you would like to donate gently worn coats, boots, gloves or hats, you may still drop off items in the Temple office.

 MRDD PARTIES

On December 10, SAC member Patti Margolis chaired this year’s annual MRDD Holiday Party, which entertained about 120 people who dressed up for the occasion, received gifts, and danced throughout the evening. More than 30 volunteers helped with serving the sit-down dinner and with clean-up afterward.

Other upcoming MRDD events sponsored by SAC include the Valentine’s Day Dance on February 11, which will be chaired by Elaine Cohen, and a Movie Night on April 22.

 INTERFAITH HOSPITALITY NETWORK

Temple Israel continues to be a support congregation for the Interfaith Hospitality Network, which offers short-term housing to the invisible homeless, particularly families that don’t qualify for shelters.  Volunteers from Temple Israel provide meals and transportation to families in the program, and some relief to the host congregations that provide a place—usually classrooms in the religious school areas—for the families to sleep. IHN maintains a day house where the clients receive a  variety of services, like job placement and housing services.

Our next support commitment is for February 9, 10, 23 and 24. If you’d like to volunteer, contact Bruce Zake at bruce@brucezake.com or 330-869-6466. Don’t be shy—we’ll be sure to pair you with an experienced volunteer who can teach you the ropes. For more information about the IHN, go to http://www.ihnsummit.org/index.php.

TASHLICH SERVICE

FIRESIDE CHAT

A large crowd attended the Fireside Chat on March 16 to hear Rabbi David A. Lipper and Rev. Dr. Jay Groat discuss “Jesus: Human or Divine.”

"Yes, this Rabbi was funny!"

There must be some joke in the fact that we dodged the heaviest snow in recent years to welcome Rabbi Bob Alper and his stand-up comedy routine. The warmth and laughter filled the Temple Israel Social Hall, and for a time, we forgot the aches and pains brought on by the constant shoveling of snow. Thanks to Jeannine Marks who headed this endeavor and made it such a wonderful moment.

We also thank our Patrons for the evening: David and Dora Lipper, Michael and Elaine Neumann, Art and Shelly Krakauer, Bob Godshall and Melodie Phillips, Joyce and Mike Butlien, Ron and Kay Winer, Elaine and Scott Jaffe, Steve and Jeannine Marks, Steve and Sue Sigalow, Laura Lee Garfinkel, Marti Adams, Terry and Julie Zimmerman, Mark Gersman, David and Bobby Adler, Mark and Teresa Weinberger.

We celebrated Chanukah with a PowerPoint presentation depicting the holiday through the ages, set to music.
Then...we ate! Brisket, latkes and more.
Thanks to Elyssa Hilton and the Sisterhood!

If you are interested in visiting members of our congregation who are sick,
either in the hospital, a nursing home, hospice, or at home,
Temple Israel's Bikkur Cholim Committee would like to talk to you.
Training is available for all new volunteers. Please contact Temple Israel at (330)762-8617.
